Saw a junior version of Mulan at parochial middle school to which my TBM daughter send her. Very well done and teaches girls to be all they can be. I noted for my GD that a paper she wrote a couple of years ago about Deborah Sampson was about a relative. I also noted that the story of Judith in the Bible was about a woman who won the battle while the men did nothing. Joan of Arc also comes to mind. Yet the BoM lacks heroines.

Look at me,
I may never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter.
Can it be,
I'm not meant to play this part?
Now I see, that if I were truly to be myself,
I would break my family's heart.

Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Somehow I cannot hide?
Who I am, though I've tried.
When will my reflection show, who I am, inside

Gosh, what does that remind you of?

Love that song (and the movie too!)
Christina Aguilera back when she was a budding Disney protégé.

In the movie, the songs are sung by Leah Solonga, the wonderfully talented Filipina.

And yes, I've heard almost those exact words from young mormon girls. :(

Yes, and I actually like the 'in' movie version the best. But at the end, after the credits, you can see a very young Christina sing the full version. That was just after her 'Mickey Mouse Club' days with Brittney.

But the gal in the movie does the best job of it, IMO.

Christina Aguilera did in fact sing the end title version, which would have been the "pop" format heard over the radio. Both arrangements, of course, were on the CD. (But IMO the orchestral score was much better than any of the songs.)

It was this song that put Aguilera on the map, so to speak. She nailed it live on one of the late-night talk shows.

I was employed by Disney's music division at the time, so this is stuff that I know well.

I wonder if the new releases of Mulan still have Aguilera’s video after the end credits? Our copy of Mulan is in old VHS format. Remember those days? Way back then? LOL.

Whenever we’ve re-watched it, I’ve always teased my daughter when that end video comes on by saying, ‘That can’t be Christina, she has clothes on!’ (She looks so prim and proper in the video.)

Don’t get me wrong though, I love Christina's work, she rocks (or I guess you’d say she ‘pops’?)

I can't imagine why the video wouldn't be included. The standard contract she would have signed gave Disney the right to use her recordings however & whenever they wanted. Of course, they were obliged to pay royalties, but as she was then a relative unknown, the rate would have been minimal.

The DVD version we have does not have it, though I do remember it from the VHS version we have somewhere in a box...:)

Saw her (Leah Solonga) in Miss Saigon on Broadway. Very good.

"Yet the BoM lacks heroines."

That tells you something about Joseph, doesn't it?

I met Christina Aguilera at girls camp when I was in my last year. Her family went to a ward in PA that my high school sweetheart (now husband) was from. It was in our stake. She actually sang at the wedding reception of a couple I babysat for. Anyway, she was a complete bully and a real jerk. Just one of those mean girls type. She was with a couple friends at camp and started picking on my husband's little sister and some other little girls. I remember telling her to piss off and grow up, and I remember her snickering with her friends when I'd pass her in the mess hall. But that's about all I can recall.

That's sad to hear. I had no idea she was (is?) Mormon.
That's ok, her panties were showing. Oh, I guess that was on purpose. :)

Didn't she grow up with a single mother? I always thought if it as being one of those situations where her mother probably depended on help from the church/members - typical, but I could be wrong.

She was Mormon briefly, and yeah her mom was a single mother for a little while, I believe it was her stepfather who was a member.
