Rough Stone Rolling: did Joseph really refuse wine and being tied down?

He had holes bored in his leg and parts of his shin chiseled off while he gushed blood. It seems... stupid, just too stupid to actually be true. Bushman mentions it in passing without a remark. Is there anything to substantiate this besides Lucy's account?

I don't see why he would since he freely drank wine and beer in other parts of his life, both prior to and after the writing of the "Word of wisdom"

One of the seminal episodes in Mormon history.

Pappa Joe had no health insurance so he consented to let HJ undergo experimental surgery with no guarantee abut more importantly no fee.

I've always heard he was offered whisky rather than wine but who really knows?

It's very likely that he may have been given an opium based pain medicine, such as laudanum...so technically, yes, he could have had the surgery without consuming straight whiskey.
