The above story refers to Gold & Green Balls as, "... dances held by wards ... in the early 20th century..."

Now I'm walking stooped over, chewing tobacco and starting every sentence with, "by cracky..."

+1!! Never went to a G&G Ball....thought it would be too lame (plus it would require dancing with straight laced Mormon girls, or so I thought) ...and blue balls were my life from age 14 on for a few years....

Blue balls turn either golden with age or turn green without use.

I went to those "balls" in the late 50s/early 60s....
We didn't dress like that.

Ancient looking dresses.......and hair styles.

AND the doll...what doll is that?

YES, I'm old but really???? This seems ancient.

They were still around in the 70s.

Exactly! How dare they refer to them as belonging to the 'early 20th century.' I wasn't even born in the early 20th century!!

By cracky!

I went to one in 1983 or 1984.

Good heavens! You are certainly correct in that observation!!

Was Idaho a slave state during Civil (but deadly) War?

Idaho wasn't a state at all during the civil war.

Pocatello is the Dixie of Idaho, I guess. I was bored there once as a teenager.

I think it was known as Pocasmello in the early 20th century.

No, it was once inhabited by Nephites who called it Paanchitello. Later, when the LDS people realized that Paanchi was not white and delightsome, they renamed it Pocatello, after Pokey, who was orange.

The only green and gold balls I've ever seen were on the

christmas Trees, by cracky.

And you're telling me they had dances,

balls? Were they fun?

well, there was no 'naughty' dancing, and no stuck together like saran wrap dancing, and you weren't allowed to poke your tongue in your partner's ear...

I'm thinking that the "dirty bump" did in the Gold & Green balls...

1977, as I recall. Our stake president was a lawyer, and he had done some work for a local soul-funk band. The SP let the band play the G&G ball for payment.

This was during the height of disco, so the band played the Commodores, Tavares, Spinners, etc. It was kinda funny, that soul band up there playing for a 100% white kids church audience. The band took a break, and they all went into the bathroom to smoke. Nobody bothered to tell them that there was no smoking in the building. I got to be the one who went into the bathroom and told them no smoking. They were not happy.

Well then, why go?

I guess I didn't miss much.

HIGHLY doubt that photo dates from 1965, but if so, those gals were about 20 years behind the fashion dictates of the era.

They were mormon women from Idaho. At *least* 20 years behind. :)

The last full-up GG ball I went to, held in the stake center but with live orchestra and people dancing up a storm was in 1986. Now that Mormons have gotten all dour and stern-faced, they might as well be old-school Baptists.

Yes, the fashions and hairdoes in that photo were from the 40s and early 50s. I was just out of high school in 65 and we never would have dressed like our moms for a dance! But since it was Mormon Idaho, not a normal place, I can believe the 20 years out of style look. Pitiful.
