I have somehow been put on a list to receive emails from a distant cousin on his mission. He mentioned that he has an iPad with all of the discussions. I asked him what he has loaded on the iPad and if he can use the Internet on it. He never did answer the question.

I notice as the weeks go by that he mass emails "inspiring" details about his week and thanks everyone who emailed him by name. Very boring.

Is this the way all missionaries are communicating now? Also, does anyone know what iPad applications are installed or available to them?

My guess is that a computer savvy kid would be either watching porn or playing Angry Birds.

Considering that the morg monitors their email; don't even expect a lot of juicy tidbits.

They are not the real ipads as most people think of. They're 1800's rocks that were the ipads of their time.

I asked a pair of missionaries recently how they like their IPads and they said they love them. They also said that the missionaries in their mission, now that they have IPads to take care of emailing parents, etc. on Preparation Day, are no longer allowed to go to libraries. Libraries are now off limits, the reason being, they said, that too many missionaries were looking at things on library computers that were against the rules.

I have hopes for a repeat of what happened in the CA San Fernando mission about 18 months ago: iPads were issued and immediately those elders who were like me in the mission field, immediately found ways around the church protective firewalls and were using them like normal kids do, so they were pulled, and the roll-out was stalled while righteous IT people worked on better Holy McGhost firewalls.

I read in mishie blogs from other missions about how their scheduled access to iPads was put back because of 'some elders in the San Fernando mission...'

I found this today, on the blog of a sister RM:

"Since coming home from my mission, I’ve been hit with a few curveballs. I didn’t have a ton of contact with friends from school while in the field, and so was surprised to come home and find that many had gone inactive or left the Church and their faith behind them in the 18 months I was gone. I’ve had a hard time reconciling it – many of them had been incredibly strong when I left Virginia."
