Just found a Declaration of Intention for a relative who immigrated from England in 1912.

In addition to disavowing allegiance to King George, the paper has this statement at the bottom:

"I am not an anarchist; I am not a polygamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy."

Searching further, I discovered that that was standard language on anyone's Declaration of Intention form.

I guess it was a real problem back then?

That's really interesting. Who would have thought that would be an issue?

I wonder if this was meant to be discrimination against Mohammedan polygamists, and African polygamists?

We're looking into adjusting my wife's status to permanent resident (green card), and the current forms right now ask if you plan to practice polygamy!
