But the two likely mass gravesites "discovered" are orders of magnitude larger than the remains uncovered during 1999 monument reconstruction (underwritten by the LDS Church).

These two were discovered by an archaeologist, Everett Bassett, and the original story broke in Arkansas and was discussed in this thread. Unfortunately, the original article linked in this thread is now behind a paywall.

The link you've provided is pretty complete, so thank you. The significant difference is that the two rock structures are on private land rather than that owned by the LDS Church.

The skeletons uncovered earlier and subjected to a forensic examinaiton by Shannon Novak--until Utah governor Mike Leavitt, a descendant of an MMM participant, ordered the remains reburied in probable violation of state law--consisted of the remains of 28 victims, mostly women and children. Here's a link to the first of the three part article by Christopher Smith that fueled the orginal controversy (and led me to becoming a "student of the massacre").

Here's an excellent video on that subject I'm always happy to show at Exmormon gatherings here in Salt Lake.

Will Bagley was really excited by this find, and he mentioned it in a presentation I attended here in Utah promoting David Bigler's new book, "Confessions of a Revisionist Historian."

The little memorial is clearly visible on google maps' satellite view. I wonder if its possible to locate these other burial sites.
