In my ex-mo years I have come to speculate that ol' horny Joe was probably using the "flaming Sword" as a phallic symbol to describe himself. Joe is the angel with the flaming sword - and he knows it. I can imagine he and Hyrum laughing their scrawny asses in the back room of the Hotel Nauvoo, "Hyrum, Hyrum...lol..I told those gals that an angel with a flaming sword would do me in if they didn't screw me...AND THEY BOUGHT IT. I am such a genius."

Ironically, they're still buying it today.

Reading about Joseph Smith's Rape Angel is what got me looking at the faith in a more discerning light. It's there in the church essay about Smith's polygamy, but no context is given for it. I had to find out the Rape Angel was used in proposing for myself.

I've never actually met anyone who believes that an angel would have killed Smith for not marrying certain girls, though. People I talk to just shrug and say no one is perfect. Absolute power corrupts absolutely or whatever. How the idea of Smith using his position to coerce women doesn't bother them more is beyond me.
