Seems like I read somewhere, but I'm not sure, that at first the word of wisdom only frowned on alcohol and tobacco, but the men wanted the women to have to give up something too so coffee and tea were included. Have you heard that before?

We'll never know for sure, but the theory behind that goes something like this:

Emma got all pissy at Joe because he made it her duty to clean up after all his important meetings, which only men could attend. She complained about the chewing tobacco and how the men got all uncouth because of their imbibing of spirits.

Joe knew she had a valid complaint, but being the asshole that he was raised to be, he couldn't help but take a swipe at her (and women) by coming up with coffee and tea to be added to the list of suggested items to avoid.

If the men were going to have to give up something, so were the women. The lesson to be learned from this version of things is don't be an asshole.
