Can you be called as a "service" missionary if you are active but your spouse is inactive?

Don't believe so, Having served in Salt Lake I had enormous exposure to everything mormon and I never encountered a non-couple service missionary.

Do you have to have a temple recommend?

To answer my own question- I looked up LDS service missionaries. You need to pass worthiness interviews to be able to work for the church for FREE. My not so TBM hubby was approached to serve. He is a closeted Exmo. He is very skilled in the area that they need. I hope he is really angry when he realizes he isn't worthy.
He is one of the best people I know. D*** this church.

you may find that - if they need him badly enough - they can overlook certain aspects

they may also rationalise away any problems by suggesting that they are doing him a favour

eg, if we can get brother X to do the gardening at the chapel, it will help him to lose his nicotine addiction.

and - the clincher - "the spirit has revealed to me" --- if 'god' thinks that Brother X is the best person to do XYZ, then who are we to say he shouldn't, just because of some minor worthiness issues

I call it slave labor. They need the recommend so TSCC knows they are church broke and Will tolerate abuse.

The "worthiness interview" is like the red velvet rope at a nightclub. The entire point is to look exclusive, like they are doing you a big favor letting you in. Reality, they are taking your time and money and giving you little in exchange. Without the exclusiveness, few would fall for it. They give them worthless titles and strict rules, telling members to look up to them, when really they are just abused volunteers.

It's a Tom Sawyer approach to volunteerism, white washed with a veneer of sanctimony.

His worthiness issue is he doesn't believe.

Tom Sawyer tactics used to benefit the Morg.

Sam Clemens would no doubt be amused.

I don't know if family history counts as "service."
My wife served a family history mission a few years ago. I am exmo.

When asked "Will you accept a calling"?, I always respond with "What is it you want me to do for free?"
