Someday, people will smile with amusement when they see the figure of Jesus on a cross the same way we do with Greek gods depicted as part human representing human concerns. They will think, "People actually believed that tale about a half god?"
Imagine in a few centuries tourists visiting cathedrals the same way we now visit Greek temples to the gods of that time.
At one time people took the Greek gods seriously as if they were real. We see the decline of deities time after time in culture after culture. It's naïve to think it would not happen in our culture. Some take longer than others to fizzle out.
The question is, what god(s) will humans create next? Humans seem to keep creating a god to explain any gaps in knowledge over and over.
Studying world mythology in conjunction with anthropology was truly an eye opener for me. The patterns of how and why religious mythology is created becomes obvious.
That is comforting. Like people working to eradicate diseases, leaving religion helps eradicate senseless hate. Accepting reality for what it is and not expecting special favors is a good way to view the world.
There is a front page article in the Minneapolis paper today on the demise of a local "mega church". Granted infighting led to the final closing, but from 7000 members to dead.
