High doses of many things can be linked to miscarriages.

Crusaders lock on to improbable things and enlarge them to their own purposes.

Depending on the genetic structure of a woman caffiene will or will not have an affect.

Show me empirical evidence that this is a danger and then I will consider believing it.

Correlation is not causation.

As noted in the article, the link may be due to differences in mother behaviors, i.e., mothers who are at a higher risk for miscarriage may consume more caffeine.

However, it is unlikely that this subtle distinction will be appreciated by Mormons who get giddy at every piece of flimsy "evidence" that supports their premise that tscc is true and led by an inspired prophet.

Edit: sorry, posted in wrong spot, this isn't intended as a response to desertman.

I can't seem to find where Joseph Smith mentioned caffeine.

does caffeine have any 'proven' beneficial effects?

it is a natural occurring component of some plants, correct?
is it ADDED to some soft drinks? (Coke, Mtn Dew, etc)

Research indicates a number of benefits associated with caffeine, including improved memory and reduced risk of skin cancer, Alzheimer's, kidney stones, etc.

Pregnancy is a time when a wise woman alters her daily life--diet (food and drink), exercise, sleep position, etc.

What is just fine for her might not be optimum/healthy for a developing fetus. Err on the side of caution.

Booze, coffee, drugs, everything. Better to depend on a balanced diet and quality prenatal supplements. A few months of being careful is worth it overall.

In Joseph Smith's day there was the belief among some people that you should not drink hot drinks, but it was the HEAT that was the issue, not the content of the drinks. You weren't supposed to have hot soup either for the same reason. I don't know exactly what temperature was considered to be TOO hot, like if you could have warm drinks but just not hot.

I used to drink a lot of diet Coke years ago. But when I got pregnant (this was 30 years ago) I stopped drinking it immediately. There are a lot of things you're supposed to do and not do when you're pregnant, and you follow your doctor's advice. Even so, about 1/5 of first pregnancies end in miscarriage. I miscarried at 10 weeks, but got pregnant again right away and no troubles the second go around.

My non-caffeine-consuming sister had four miscarriages.
