I just read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I had heard some vague references to Ghost Dancers before, but I knew nothing about Wovoka, the Piute Messiah. In reading about him, there were some references to beliefs that he held that sounded like he might have been influenced in some way by Mormonism. Being the good ex-Mormon that I am I googled, Mormons and Ghost Dancers and got a reference to a book. Have any of you read Mormons, Indians and the Ghost Dance Religion by Dr. Garold D. Barney?

No, but it sounds like an interesting read!

There is also "The Ghost Dance", by Weston La Barre.

Yes, the Ghost Dance shirts were inspired by the Mormon temple garments. Wovoka was told that the clothing protected the (Mormon) white people, and he had a revelation that told him that if the native people wore the shirts according to the pattern revealed to him that they would likewise be protected from the weapons of the white men.
