What's the game plan here? I don't understand what the threat even is, to either the industry or to Uthans. The whole thing is just stupid.

There is no real threat to Utah--unless you see the diminished LDS influence as a threat.

From the industry's perspective, they don't want this kind of language adopted by policy makers--beyond Utah. And that's not an imaginary fear for them.

The 2016 Republican Party Platform includes the following statement: "Pornography, with its harmful effects,
especially on children, has become a public health
crisis that is destroying the lives of millions. We encourage
states to continue to fight this public menace
and pledge our commitment to children’s safety
and well-being." (p. 40). I find it hard to imagine that influential Utah LDS folks, in combination with some like minded evangelicals, didn't have a role in getting this language in this document.

To be fair, this section is bracketed by statements about child pornography and child exposure to pornography that are non-controversial. But, the LDS/Utah government perspective is that pornography is generally harmful, and if they had the government should promote that view through warning labels, and maybe down the line go further in restricting a person's access. Notice the platform says harmful effects, especially on children. This implies there are harmful effects to adults--without saying that clearly or directly.

The industry is trying to stop the motion at the door by singling out Utah's...ugh...unique sexual past. This isolates this issue to a Utah thing.

Typical. The prophet, seer, and revelator of god's one true church has nothing useful to say.

There are a lot of bigger issues in Utah. Bad air, poor public education, polluted waters, suicide rates off the charts, etc. But, distracting the Utah sheep from the real issues, with Porn or SSM, keeps them from focusing on the important stuff.
