Oh well, I have family ties in Vancouver.

DH has been wanting to move to the Pacific Northwest for ages anyway. Canada isn't that much farther.

I don't know, I live in Cali now but I lived in upstate New York, Michigan, and Minnesota for years and they were all fine. Better to feel the cold there than the heat of hatred here.

I was looking at the northern Montana Rockies (70 miles away) this morning on my way in to town for coffee. We had a spectacular sunrise this morning and Chief Mountain and it's neighbors in and near Glacier National Park were as stunning as they were yesterday. And BTW it's just as cold in January in Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota as it is in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
I love where I live. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else, including B.C. (BRING CASH). I can fly to a warm place in a couple hours for a winter break.

On a side note, Canada's national anthem is in my top three worldwide in terms being rousing. French anthem top, then the Russian anthem, then Canada. Love the British anthem but it depends on how it is played. Wish they would change, at least for England, to Land of Hope and Glory or I Vow to Thee My Country.

Indeed he is. Dr. May is an astrophysicist and has published learned papers on subjects most of us have no clue about.

Excellent but I think I prefer the version played at the Last Night of the Proms the last few years...starts quietly and builds. to a crescendo Great rendition of Land of Hope and Glory there also.

Really, kentish? Many of us think it's so basic and bland, with a boring, repetitive tune. The words are OK though.

I agree with you about the French anthem, hands down. So exciting, especially on the football (soccer) pitch! Not that we're ever cheering for France to win. :)

Russian - can't say I've ever heard it, to my knowledge.

Land of Hope or My Country would both be great choices for the UK. I have often thought they should have a separate song, one for the anthem and one for the Queen, when she's present or on a special Royal occasion.

But, they don't ask for my opinion, to my surprise.

Nightingale, as a Canadian you know that can't be true! You watch Hockey and the Olympics, you know their anthem.

Good catch, Human. I must have heard the Russian anthem, of course, but apparently I was oblivious. I went and listened to it on YouTube but can't say I would recognize it anywhere.

I agree with kentish, though, that it sounds good. I can't imagine remembering all the words, it seems so long. I'm fairly hopeless at remembering all the words to the Canadian anthem, I think because they all sound so repetitious to me. I hope that doesn't make me somehow less patriotic. (I especially have trouble if we have to sing the middle part in French, even though I think I'm not so terrible at knowing a bit of the French language - after three years of it in school).

I will try to pay more attention!

1972. Canada-Russia hockey series. Something you Americans will never understand the importance of. CBC did an Oh Canada/Russian national anthem combination that I can still hear. It was powerful.

Remember when the Russians skated off the ice before the Canadian anthem last year?
