Tragic. What drives a 16 year old to this level of hatred and violence? Bullying and peer pressure to conform? Glad no one died. Will be interested in how this plays out.

Ron, you're probably correct as to the reason and motive. School attacks like this generally take place in suburbs where kids feel deep disconnection with their peers and communities. I hope the young man gets the mental health support he needs, and that the students and families can come together and heal. This is so sad!

I have relatives living in Orem.

That's more bad news in a climate of fear - this time *not* involving guns.

It isn't involving guns but there have been many times where such an attack, one not involving guns, was used to push for stricter gun laws. It just doesn't make sense to me.

If he'd used a gun, there probably would be 5 dead, not 5 injured...

Hope everybody heals, too many of these kind of incidents.

You never miss an opportunity to spew your BS, don't you? Have some respect for the community.

Other people made it political...we were both responding. Who responds to a stabbing with gun rights stuff?! How does that respect the community?

Took me too long to get it...

It should be National Knifle Association.

That's why the students involved are still alive, thank goodness. If it'd been a shooting, they most likely wouldn't be.

After all the abuse and sexual assault from teachers in recent years, I wouldn't trust them either to be the "good guys." Yikes.

And as a teacher, I'd never trust myself to shoot back in an attack no matter how much training I had...statistically that's just not what happens in a crisis. The gun is more likely to be used against the teacher or students than to be used in defense.

My 4 children all graduated from MVHS and we lived blocks from the school. We've been texting all morning about this. My one daughter goes over to their track to walk in the mornings but today she was delayed at home, thank goodness. we are all just sick about this.

News report on KSL television just reported that the perpetrator had previously been home schooled and had just started attending Mountain View high school this year.

"News report on KSL television just reported that the perpetrator had previously been home schooled and had just started attending Mountain View high school this year."

That makes me wonder if he had been bullied, and was retaliating.

Mormons make up about 90% of Utah County's population. I'd bet that a homeschooler in the area would have an even higher chance of being Mormon. I think a lot of Mormons who homeschool their children do so through the lower grades then send them to public school for the higher grades. That's how several of my nieces and nephews were educated, anyway.

I used to attend there. I do hope those kids recover, and the person who did the stabbing gets proper help.

(Not to detract from a tragedy)

apparently this guy wasn't called to the mission he wanted, & not a member of MoRoyalty / no GA connections...

Sorry for victims & all concerned, I am

Horrible. We need more mental health care available in this country. Suburban kids seem to be very troubled these days.

Maybe he stabbed them because they wouldn't give up their brass plates. Or were messing with the king's sheep. I hope they make a full recovery. At least no heads were cut off.

I'm guessing that mental health issues are involved. The school staff was very brave to stop him, and the police officer acted with admirable restraint under the circumstances.

Really? Mass killings are happening because of trophies (which barely actually even exist)? Not well documented social and emotional isolation caused by untreated mental illnesses and living in suburbia, a constant state of fear mongering and warfare, and graphic violence in the media scientifically proven to increase levels of violent thoughts and behaviors?

Yeah, it's all the millennials' fault because their self confidence is just way too high. Riiiight.

Cute. I've personally never seen these so called trophies, I'd be interested to know if they actually exist. Maybe on kids' sports teams?
