Any cheating on his wife shows poor character and morals. I don't know that he should be demoted for that. But he shouldn't be trusted. If he were unmarried or his wife consented, I don't see a problem. I think that they feared that he could he blackmailed. His best defense against that arguement is to go as public as possible with the story himself now. It's hard to show that someone can be shamed if they dispplay no shame on their own. But either way it probably won't work.
well that is nice, but the good old LDS Inc funded Olympic bid bribery scandal for the 2002 Utah ( MORmON) olympics was the one so blatant that it forced me to dump MORmONISM, so that one will always be my favorite ......even if I periodically sleep with other ones !
I am more worried about morally compromised generals spreading authentic news (information) carelessly, or worse--to hostile actors.
It's bad enough to let Mormon royalty off the hook in Utah for such shenanigans, but Haight was screwing up in the big REAL world, where consequences for malfeasance are international and very serious. Those in the highest level command are not, it seems, taking any chances or giving any slack after the David Patraeus scandal. At least, I hope not.

Lindbergh was a colonel in the reserves who was eventually promoted to general. He had a long term on/off relationship with a German woman and had several children by her. This wasn't known until after he died.
Roosevelt died in the arms of his mistress.
Reporters looked the other way back then.
It's a different world now.

I think the turning point on the press's* willing silence was JFK and all his mistresses. Perhaps they just couldn't believe or deal with the fact that a glamorous guy with such a gorgeous, classy wife could be such a shameless womanizers.
