That's because Mormons are threatened with eternal consequences if they follow their heart. It takes courage and/or confidence that the Church is wrong about that, before one can find the courage to leave.
And for me it's become even easier to listen to my heart since I left.
All that noise, belching forth from all those wind-up automatons--gone!
No more insipid testimonies! No more pompous pablum from the conference pulpit! No more callow missionaries ludicrously positing the route for MY salvation!
Francis Bacon said, "Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom." Deduct Mormonism and one's precious store of silence increases five-fold.

I do like this wrt to TSCC.
However, with all due respect to Swedish Roxette: the encouragement was to check oneself carefully because saying goodbye would likely be the wrong decision.
