Mormons aren't the only cons who can use ancient Mesoamerican ruins to concoct an entire mythology:

"The Outer Space Connection"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFqFtHQ1KJk

Had Joseph Smith been born in the twentieth century he would have used UFOs and aliens instead of angels but the result is the same. He created a UFO religion years ahead of other familiar alien cults like Heaven's Gate.

Joseph's Myth & Co. handed down their MO to one Ron Hubbard who updated the scam and described the cosmic connection in pulp fiction worthy of Kilgore Trout.

Both bands of mountebanks found followers to shower them with gold.

The Cosmic Version seems better since there's no evidence of the JoeCo joke in Yucatan.

What with Kolob, moon quakers, beings on the sun, and more, the mormons already use UFOs and aliens. I'd say Joe was ahead of his time, but he wasn't -- scifi was already in full swing by the 1830's. :)

I think it's important to note that you can't spell "Brooklyn" without "Kolob."

Coincidence? I think not.

This Mormon/hipster connection may be news to some of you but has been more than obvious to those of us who have been paying attention. Expect an essay from the mothership in SLC any day now.

"However, a more direct object of Locke's satire was Rev. Thomas Dick, who was known as "The Christian Philosopher" after the title of his first book. Dick had computed that the Solar System contained 21,891,974,404,480 (21.9 trillion) inhabitants. In fact, the Moon alone, by his count, would contain 4,200,000,000 inhabitants. His writings were enormously popular in the United States, his fans including intellectual luminaries such as Ralph Waldo Emerson."

>... his fans including intellectual luminaries such as Ralph Waldo Emerson."

AND the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith, who had read Dick's "Philosophy of a Future State" and included many of the ideas in his "translation" of the Book of Abraham.

Edited to add:

How ironic! The Wikipedia article as a reference to an old Deseret News article from 1893 about the "moon hoax," and comments that "It seems preposterous that anyone should have believed this wonderful story..." but does not mention that Mormon prophets Smith and Young BOTH believed that the moon was inhabited, Smith even describing the lunar population.

Xenu brought only a few billion thetans to Teegeeack (a.k.a. "Earth"). Who knows how many billions, or trillions, he left behind? You can't disprove those other thetans still in other parts of the Galactic Confederacy!

I'm a Level X Operating Cretin, and I know about these things--personally!

Comments section... I had to Google him for the exact year, but Serling hied off to Kolob in 1975.

Here we go...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outer_Space_Connection

>This documentary explores the controversial theory that extraterrestrials explored the Earth in the distant past. These extraterrestrials had a profound effect on the creation of human life and the founding of civilization, after which they left mankind to evolve on its own with a promise they would return at a future date.

Grammar correction: That should read "controversial hypothesis."

>The film was released by Sunn Classic Pictures who also released the documentary film, Chariots of the Gods, in 1970.

They have one bit of science correct: Any species that managed interstellar travel would've essentially had to be immortal.

I'm reminded of an old cartoon by either Bagley or Grondahl,
back in the early days of Mormon cartooning. It showed an EQ
class and the teacher was saying, "this week we'll be having a
lesson in faith, which will deteriorate into a discussion on
ancient American airfields."

"Ancient America Speaks" (1972)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I9LDLcIh9g

How is this any different? At least the alien stuff is more exciting.

This is a more apt comparison:

"Bull@(&t Or Not" with Henry Silva from "Amazon Women On The Moon"

... when I was in the fifth grade.

And I just discovered that the film was nominated for an Oscar (I hope the Academy does a little better job now of vetting these documentary films for accuracy and scientific credibility):
