Now that's a revelation!

So in the early 19th century, Urim and Thummim were thought to be ancient divination tools. Joe rigged up a breastplate with craftsmanship similar to Uncle Rico's time machine (wouldn't let anyone look at it directly) and told everyone that the Urim and Thummim were scrying tools. And they bought it.

Imagine the thrill of pulling off such a caper. Making people actually believe that you carry a magic stone that only you can use to translate ancient holy scripture. Lots more fun than faking Bigfoot footprints or crop circles.

Joe wouldn't have a chance to pull off the same caper in today's climate. He'd be into running other rackets such as telemarketing scams.

Funny.
The founders of Yale made an ignorant mistake similar to what Smith did when he used those words -- that "urim and thummim" were magical objects that gave the "light and truth" of god.

When in reality, they were the magic 8 ball of the Hebrews.

Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one! Joey attending Yale. He would have never made it past the first tests unless he scammed a way to have someone else take his tests.....and I wouldn't put that past him.

Ole Joey was laaaaaazy. Yale would have have been way too much work

Horny Joe would have taken to the Skull & Bones fraternity like a duck to water.

If he hadn't grown up so impoverished and of ill repute he might have had a better chance at getting a decent education. He was smart enough if he'd used his talents in more honest endeavors to have been successful in another field other than pious fraud.

He saw an easy way to make a living after the treasure seeking only landed him in jail. It almost worked too if not for his gluttonous and wanton ways. He fancied himself above the law, until the law caught up with him in the form of a vigilante mob.

He has been attributed with being a religious genius. I'm not sure if I would go so far as giving him credit for being that. But it is what historians have noted him as having.
