Someone asked "There are 15 million Mormons at the moment. In 20 year's time, will there be 150 million Mormons?"
The heart of the answer (after a few paragraphs of "answering questions that weren't asked") is:
"It may be surprising to some, but having a large membership is not a church objective. The goal is spread the knowledge of God over the whole earth. The process to accomplish this is commonly discussed within the church in the terms of a ‘tent’ metaphor. God has instructed Israel to enlarge the borders of the the tent, meaning to add more material so it could be spread over a larger area. The larger tent was supported by more poles, longer cords and more stakes. It is no accident then that a properly organized community within the church is called a ‘stake’. It refers to an anchor for the tent of Zion; a place of security and strength. Membership is incidental to the establishment of these stakes and the corresponding construction of temples."
Well, well, that should give missionaries pause.
I kinda like reading the answers about mormonism on Quora, because it gives me a chance to say "WTF!?" out loud at least once a day...
