On the CBC Radio 1 (Canada) medical show, "White Coat-Black Art" hosted by ER Doctor Brian Goldman, there was an in depth discussion on the poor performance of the flu shot over the last few years. The current shot is less than 20% effective against the H1N2 flu and top scientists were discussing the need for a new regimen to develop a universal vaccine with longer lasting effects rather than the current new vaccine every year that on average costs the WHO US$200M to produce. Look for the podcast on CBC. It's worthwhile to listen to what scientists on the front line are thinking.
I got the flu shot for the first time last fall. My rationale was to protect me from the flu and from other associated threats like pneumonia. I'm going to get the pneumonia shot when I get home from my winter break in Arizona. Pneumonia was the final stage of my dear wife's life last October and was the cause of my father's demise 17 years ago.
