Statistically speaking, is 125 people, or 12 teenagers, testing positive for HIV, syphilis or both, in a city the size of Milwaukee really above average for the USA and Canada?

Just asking.

Full disclosure: I'm all for testing absolutely everyone.

I know this is an honest question, but determining a somewhat accurate answer would probably require a fair amount of time and research...

...which is probably more complicated right now than these kinds of inquiries used to be.

Statistics like this (especially when they involve more than a single state or territory of our 50+ "major" jurisdictions) are national in scope, and very likely primarily federal in finances, and right now we are in the midst of a national (and seed-down local) decrease in this kind of research.

I guess no-one on the forum wants to make a definitive statement on such a fluid issue.

Journalists, however.... ;)

You know me, always willing to do the math...

According to the CDC, the national rates of infection per 100K people in 2016 were:

Syphilis: overall:8.7 15-19 age range: 6.1
HIV: overall:1.4 15-19 age range: 0.8

Milwaukee has a population of 600K. So per the national averages, they should expect, over the entire city in the course of a year, 52 cases of Syphilis, and 37 cases among the 15-19 year olds; they should expect 8 cases of HIV overall, and 5 cases among 15-19 year olds.

The article says there were 125 diagnosed with Syphilis/HIV/both in one small geographic area (it doesn't break out how many had one or the other).

That would be 2.4 times the expected city-wide rate of Syphilis, and 15.6 times the expected city-wide rate of HIV (assuming all 125 had both).

So, yeah -- it's well above the national average.

edited to add: if you were really interested in the answer to your own question, why didn't YOU go do the math?
All of these stats are easily available on the 'net...

This is no surprise. And people wonder why promiscuity was frowned upon in the past.

We have a sex obsessed society which promotes loose living without pointing out the consequences.

The selfish/individualistic traits of neoliberalism favor personal pleasure over socialization and intimacy... resulting in lonely older people.

I have a family member now battling for his life at the age of 34 due to tonsil cancer.

The cause? HPV. A STD

No, he is not gay, but that doesn't matter, and is, quite frankly, ignorant of what is going on.

And various forms of throat area cancers are on the rise due to HPV . Straight and gay

He ate some bad pu$$y.
Throat cancer is often linked to that.
But not always.

And they can determine when it is related to it. His chance of survival is higher because it is due to the HPV virus and not tobacco.

That's the so-called "silver lining" of having cancer due to HPV.

News media reporting IMHO is always panic based to create confusion and sell "news papers"

Absolutely. People need their emotional "fixes" throughout the day.
Nowadays, you don't even have to wait for the newspaper or the TV show--you can pull it up on line any time and pick whichever clickbait interests you. All you have to do is fight your way through the pop-up ads.
And of course, Milwaukee was the setting for the hit 1970s sitcom "Happy Days." Looks like it's evolved some since then.
