Essential oils aren't essential. I'm not sure they're even oils.

"Essential," in this sense, means: "containing the essence of" [meaning: the aroma and/or flavor] of the plant.

"Oil" is used in the distantly historical sense of "the liquid product produced by the plant when it is extracted/distilled down and then separated from the fibers of the plant."

All of this goes back to the times when human history was young...and medicine, as a reasonably scientific discipline, was still in the unimagined mists of the distant future.
