This guy.

Now, the people here who are somewhat familiar with me know that I am like most people here and have become disaffected with Mormonism, in large part thanks to the things that I have read on the site and other sources on the Internet. This hasn’t changed in spite of my upcoming attendance to this least august occasion. However, my dad the bishop got tickets, my folks invited me to go, and I figured that seeing a Solemn Assembly in person was a rare enough event that my clinical and intellectual interest that I’ve retained in Mormonism was sufficient enough to pique my interest. So I will be there, and hey, you can’t buy naps like that.

Anyone else here going?

Do you have to bring your own white hanky for the hosanna shout? Or is that only for temple-dedication 'solemn assemblies?'

Will you stand and signify "I do not sustain" when the new profit's name comes up? :)

No, but good luck in your endeavor.

I only attended one as an "outsider" of Zion. It was the General PH meeting in the spring. What we do-dos didn't know was that "everybody" had those tickets. There was a big line of people and somehow our group of bratty 14 year olds were herded to the front; near the ushers. Apparently, there was no more seating in the old tabernacle until they decided that we could fill up a pew with the language translator head-sets. It didn't take long for us to put on the headsets and listen to the translators trying to keep up with the talks. About half-way through the session, a bunch of my co-horts bailed the session. If my TBM mom hadn't been the sponsor/chaperone then maybe I would have bailed to go across the street too.

If you're really bored then here's the closing talk from that time. https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1988/04/to-the-single-adult-brethren-of-the-church?lang=eng

Who wants to take bets on the new apostles? My pics are Garrett W. Gong and Tad R. Callister, my same guesses a couple years ago before they sustained the three great white hopes when Packer, Perry and Scott took a permanent dirt nap.

Solemn Assemblies are a crock. You will learn nothing new .

It's like everything else in Mormonism - packaged nicely but without substance.

I'm not from Utah, and I'm not afraid to appear ignernt, and I want to know:

What's a "Solemn Assembly?"

ummmm basically it is another boring MORmON meeting of agonizing boredom, but with an alternate name and some added fancy hanky waving to jazz things up, FTR another creation of MORmON founder pervert Joseph Smith as traced back to its origins.

did I mention that it will be boring ?????

There is probably video of one on Youtube, but I am not interested enough to even check.

I've never been either, although I've lived in Utah all but 17 years of my life.

Here's what happens, according to Wikipedia.

I've been to two. It was no different than going to sacrament meeting, except that we were all dressed up and in the assembly room. Boring as hell, and no one taught anything more inspirational than in a normal sacrament meeting. Total waste of my time. Twice.

You know, the Wiki article is different from the solemn assemblies I've been to. The ones I went to were in the assembly room of the DC temple, and talks were given by stake presidents and a minor general authority or two. It was nothing as described in the Wiki article. They might be talking about THE solemn assembly, and I might be talking about A solemn assembly. Anyway,... Booooring.

Oh. I hope the new President's wife knows to wait and stand when the Relief Society members stand....

What a great April Fool's joke to tell her to stand when her husband stands!

Wake up the Mormon grandchildren early on Easter morning, get them dressed up in Easter outfits, and drive the to the ward house for Easter Service. April Fool! The building is empty! No church on Easter for the Mormons!

Take them to IHOP, instead.

Wrong?

I thought a 'Solemn Assembly' was only for the GAs, Only in temple.

Darn, Wrong Again (but, not unusual in LDS context!)

Well, there is that kind of Solemn Ass(hole ASS)embly

Then there is the kind of solemn ASSembly where the MORmON leadershit BreathUrine or even MORmON ASSpostHOLES need to heap abuse on lowly rank and file common MORmON members.

I don’t really think I’m going to learn anything, and I’ve certainly seen them on TV. I have no compunction about going to boring Mormon events when I have a personal interest in it.

Like I said, my fascination with Mormonism has become completely and intellectual. Whatever Psuedo-spiritual guidance I once had or thought I had from Mormonism has been gone now for years.

At this point my life I just need to exercise caution not to give my parents some false hope that Im making some slow return to the fold of Mormonism. I don’t go to church as much for me as I do to not give the impression to my parents or family that I believe in this nonsense.

Things like this take time.

Easy. If your family gets their hopes up about your returning, yell, "April Fool!"

Good for you! Return and report, my guess is the themes will be strengthening the members and the evils of porn. Be sure to let out a silent—but deadly one—keep ‘em guessing! The Solemn Boner.

....If NOT then Just watch this .....or something even better! on your electronic seer stone (smart phone) during that meeting !!!

FTR, I have had enough boring MORmON meetings to last me for another 10 trillion life times.

Record it?

My guess is it’s already being pre-recorded on our TiVo device back home while we watch it live in the conference center.

The only solem assembly I witnessed was after the death of McKay.

As I recall it was only priesthood holders, seated by quorums, except the Aaronic priesthood.

I remember each group standing in turn. They called high priests, 70s (this was before they were general authorities), elders and then Aaronic Priesthood.

Don't remember much else about it. Was around 50 years ago.

I remember being invited to a Solemn Assembly in the Assembly room at the Washington DC Temple on the top floor. I remember the room being impressive. But the meeting was like a sacrament meeting. Nothing earthshattering was said.
