Don't you socialize during your card games?

Um kind of. I wouldn't call it true socializing with any depth.

Who says you have to socialize "in depth"? Card-playing is socializing. Your card-playing buddies are friends.

Only the Mormons think you have to bare your guts to someone--tell each other about your sex life and your underwear, and invade each other's privacy. Mormons don't know the boundaries of propriety, that normal people, and normal friends never cross.

You're already there!

Most of the talking I did at Mormon church was about the task at hand, such as the music, or trying to keep kids quiet, and zero--ZERO--talk about my life. No one gave a damn about me or my kids, because we were from a broken home, and I worked. I was never invited to go out with the married couples, never invited into homes of ward members (except for meetings). No one in our ward ever called me to chat, except for the other divorced women. We had our own little club, on the fringes.

Think about it--have you ever had a real, two-way conversation with a Mormon? Did it ever involve laughter? Did you relate to anyone at church as much as you do with your card friends, or the people here on RFM, or with your pet (if you have one)? I had only 4 Mormon friends (divorced women) in our ward here in Utah.`

You make a very good point. I socialize better with my card playing friends than the fake mormons back in the day. I never got to talk about anything in that religion that i wanted to talk about, these days i get to say what i want to say for the most part. Sometimes what i say gets me into trouble but atleast i get to say it.

Well, I enjoy socializing with you here. Of course, I’m basically a wanker, too, so we've got a lot in common :)

I’m still not convinced that you realize what a wonderfully unique guy you are under all the Mormon shit. What I value, above all, is honesty. And your honesty comes through, Badass!

I am still socially awkward around people and anxious around people and it sucks. I am getting a bone spur removed next week that is poking my throat sl i am hoping once that is removed things will change.

Kudos to you for seeking out help from a counselor. These people have the training and know-how to help you with socializing. Also, Best of Luck with winning the battle with the health issues you face.

change does not come without hard work and usually heartache, but from my experience it is worth it. At one point in my journey, I approached my mother to see if she would be willing to talk about my family's past that was filled with emotional abuse, alcoholism, codependency and depression. Her response was, "Why bring up the past? It can't be changed." I knew from my counselor that this was most likely the response I would get despite the facts I had to prove otherwise. She passed away believing it was her way or the highway and chose to never give a "new" way a chance. It was very sad.

You have shown that you are willing to learn and give a new way a chance. Hang in there.

I used to be just a product of my past but i have to change the way i think if i am to succeed. I take any opening that presents itself to get to a better position.
