Hi Sheryl, I read that God turned the Lamanites dark skinned because they sinned, then light again when they repented, then dark again when they sinned again. Do Mormons believe God really turned Lamanites dark skinned for sinning and light again when they repented?

I am a 5th Generation Mormon and I'm trying to reconcile my beliefs with Christ's commandments to love our fellow men as ourselves. Discriminating against them based upon skin color seems like a sin, the LDS church committed for most of its history.
There's no other explanation for excluding blacks from the temple other than racism is there?
