I read the book about this. It made me feel really sorry for Kirk Anderson.

I remember hearing about it and in my outraged TBMs ness I went to the library and dug up everything I could read on the incident.
The woman was a porn star who had 'saved' (her words) herself for him....or at least her vagi(as one of my DD calls it)

Kirk had been walked in on by someone, I think her father just about the time they were to do it. He 'repented' and then went on a mission.
She followed him, kid napped him and forced herself on him.

It was a rape. Not funny how the press handled it.
"Why not just lay down and enjoy it." was the attitude (don't know if that was a quote)
I remember in the 70s that there was an attitude often said to the press regarding some poor girl who'd been raped. That she ought to have 'enjoyed' it. Ugh. Crass, if you ask me.

Assault is assault.

She had done a lot of porn pictures but wanted her guy....
Not a very stable person I think.

I'm surprised they call her a "Tabloid" queen, when I remember the press and worthy news sources of the time calling her a "Porn" queen because she'd posed in porn and been paid for it.

Is doing porn proof that person is a liar? Is a porn actress who accuses someone of raping her to be automatically dismissed? That used to be a very common attitude.

And "assault is assault" is not true. There are various degrees of assault that can be charged under various titles.

Here's Joyce's (current?) take on what happened (very condensed)
She was deeply in love with Kirk before his mission. A friend of mine was Kirks roommate for a summer (Kirk's freshman year) at Riviera Apts, and his recollection of it was that Kirk wanted his psycho girlfriend out of his life. OK, she sounds obsessive.

I saw her at the Broadway Friday evening. She did about a half hour Q&A after the movie. We were a bit taken aback to see her walk in. Frankly, she still sounds obsessed with him.

Her version is that she feels like a cult took her boyfriend and true love away from her, and she went to England to get him back. He went willingly with her for the three(?) hour ride to Devon, whee she had rented a cottage, and stocked it with enough food that they did nothing but have sex and eat for three days.

They drove back to London and were having lunch when Kirk went over and bought a newspaper, and they were surprised and horrified that the "kidnapping of a missionary" was all over the front page. They went to a phone booth and called both of their families.

According to Joyce, LDS Inc made a deliberate decision to throw her under the bus to protect their reputation. They'd be an international laughingstock if this turned into a "Mormon Love Slave" story.

So, they were bound and determined to make the kidnap/rape story stick. They told Kirk in no uncertain terms that they would throw him under a bigger bus if he said anything to weaken their case. It was her against the full power of the Mormon Church, and she was going to lose that fight. So she jumped bail.

So, is that the way it happened? I have my doubts about that being the full story. Would the LDS Church be willing to lie and throw her under the bus. Of that I have no doubt.

Incidentally, she was asked about the handcuffs. She said that she did use them during sex sometimes because it is possible to be so sexually repressed that the only way they can let go is to feel like they are no longer in control at all. "Why do you think people do bondage?"

My opinion about Joyce: charming, yes. Obsessive, yes. Narcisitic, probably. Irrational? No.

She had a male friend with her during the kidnap who, if I remember correctly, had a gun a Kirk, so it was hardly a consensual trip to the cottage.

She was also in the news a few years back when she had her dead dog cloned in Korea.

Yeah... I think it's shameful that they put the word "rape" in quotes. The man was sexually assaulted, plain and simple. Had the situation been reversed and Kirk Anderson was the aggressor, he might still be in prison.

The book I read was written by a British author and he wrote the story in a very "cheeky" way, like it was hot gossip.

This sounds like the beauty queen and the spy story from Mt Pleasant Utah. Does anyone remember Antointte Berti and Randy Brunger? She was the hometown beauty queen and he was a "spy" for the CIA or something like that.....the affair they had in the early 80's blew the town away.......turned into a major scandel. He went on to right a book about the whole thing. His only claim to fame and is now a con-man. I've heard she went on to become a successful business woman.

My view is this is what the me too movement needs is some more men who can say they've been abused by the other sex. All the big bad guys are males against supposedly vulnerable women. This story puts it all back into perspective.

This could be a very funny movie scene: some Molly Mormon in F&T meeting, all in tears, describing the incident in utmost detail, while mishies and other teenage boys in the pews get sweaty and nervous listening to it.
