They are sustained as such, but I think they were only anti-Joseph. The Smiths were the problem. So it was really anti-Smith violence that caused Joseph to ascend to heaven, er, eat lead.

The other two men jailed with them received only minor, grazing wounds. Also, only Joseph and his brother had been charged with treason (with regard to the Nauvoo Legion.) Most of the men charged with rioting in the Nauvoo Expositor incident had already been released on bond.

Resentment had been building against Joseph for a variety of offenses and reasons. The Nauvoo Expositor incident (including the newspaper's exposure of Smith's advocacy of polygamy along with the destruction of the printing press) was the straw that broke the camel's back.

And God's gimmick is killing in dramatic fashion whoever has started his church du jour in order to turn the offensive into the victim which is a necessary component of being a vital religion.

Burn 'em at the stake, throw them to the lions, tie them to a post and shoot them full of arrows. Make them memorable! Crown them with thorns and then nail them to a cross or turn them to bulleted Swiss cheese as they do a Grand Jete out the window of a jail. Inspire a mob to be there to ensure an impressively theatrical climax.

I think it has been just long enough now that Webber and Rice should reunite and put pen to paper and give Joseph the SuperStar treatment.
