There is much discussion about what this new Style Guide means.
by the new 94 year old leader: "President Russell M. Nelson was sustained and set apart as the 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, January 14, 2018, ..."

How do they want the name used, the abbreviations used, the word: Mormon used. It's all defined here.

Style Guide — The Name of the Church TOPIC
The official name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The full name was given by revelation from God to Joseph Smith in 1838.

In the first reference, the full name of the Church is preferred: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

When a shortened reference is needed, the terms "the Church" or the "Church of Jesus Christ" are encouraged.

The "restored Church of Jesus Christ" is also accurate and encouraged.

While the term "Mormon Church" has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use.

Thus, please avoid using the abbreviation "LDS" or the nickname "Mormon" as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in "Mormon Church," "LDS Church," or "Church of the Latter-day Saints."

When referring to Church members, the terms "members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" or "Latter-day Saints" are preferred. We ask that the term "Mormons" not be used.

"Mormon" is correctly used in proper names such as the Book of Mormon or when used as an adjective in such historical expressions as "Mormon Trail."

The term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred.

When referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not affiliated with polygamous groups.

Isn't it a bit ludicrous that you have to type the word 'mormon' to get to this site?

According to their Style Guide - the name Mormon will still be used when it is the name of something...

Mr. Nelson has an aversion to being called a Mormon, apparently!

It doesn't matter how the church wants the word used. They don't dictate language usage. If you want to be polite follow their guide.

Mormons could influence language away from the usage but they would have to identify the usage as offensive and derogatory. Which their own scripture uses as have they themselves so that path is closed to them. The next prophet will probably let things slide again.

Reporters and journalists only have to 'obey' the organization that pays them. Most such organization use a national style guide, not the mormon church style guide.

I hope and pray that reporters and journalists will continue to use 'mormon' whenever and wherever they chose, which I say in Jesus name, amen.

Have to make your mark someway, somehow. How about trying something else, Russ? Here's your chance. I mean the sky is the limit with the money and power you've inherited. The world is full of needs and good deeds that are waiting to be filled, especially when someone has the resources to make them happen.

You Russ, of anyone, know the value of education as you were fortunate to receive the tools in the field of medicine that really made helping others a possibility. How about using some of the billions the church has to make education possible for everyone everywhere? Books, computers, teachers, clothes, food, buildings, desks, etc. etc. etc., are badly needed. And teach real education.....not religious education.....but critical thinking, you know how to flush out facts and evidence.

Yes, doing that would change THE NAME of the church for the good, wouldn't it? Your church's reputation would change automatically....no need for this petty stuff you're doing.

I thought Mormons were proud to be called Mormon!

It makes me smile when I see the propaganda arm of the church(KSL) make all of the anchors and reporters try to use the "correct" name in their news stories. Just doesn't roll off the tongue very easily and sounds bulky and clunky. The other stations use it sometimes, but mostly just say LDS. I am sure this drives the brethren crazy!

So now you can trigger Mormons just by calling them "Mormons."

Awesome!

The style guide encourages use of “Church of Jesus Christ” when shortening it’s name.

Wikipedia states that the name, “The Church of Jesus Christ”,
was legally registered in 1941 by an entity separate from the Mormon church.

Odd that the Mormon leadership, so zealously litigious about their own copyrights and trademarks, would choose to promote this confusion.

I knew that the "Church of Jesus Christ" was already used. We went through all of this stuff years ago. The name of the church has changed since it's beginning also.

My question is why aren't the Mormon lawyers doing their job?
