"IRISH singer Sinead O'Connor has revealed she has renounced Catholicism and converted to Islam, taking the new name "Shuhada' Davitt".

O'Connor, who last year changed her legal name to Magda Davitt, said she had ditched the Catholic Church for good in a message to fans on Twitter.

The 51-year-old was previously ordained a priest by a breakaway Catholic sect, the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, in the late 1990s.

But in a series of recent tweets, the Dubliner revealed she had swapped the clerical collar for the hijab and become a Muslim."

Insensitive question of the day -

Muslim women are supposed to cover their hair… but O'Connor shaves her head (last I heard, anyway).

So if she has no hair to display, does she still have to wear a hijab? Is the bald look an acceptable substitute for hair covering in contemporary Islam?

With a religious history like hers, don't be surprised if in a few years this nut takes the not-Mormon-anymore missionary discussions and changes her name to Eliza Snow Smith Young.

This is, after all, the woman who previously excommunicated not one pope, but two.

The ol' gal is quite like a female Sid Rigdon, aflopping from radical faith to radical faith.

On the one hand, after her Pope bashing back in the 1980s,
I would ask "what took her so long to renounce Catholicism?"
On the other hand I would ask, "who cares?"

Argh.

History aside, Catholicism is so watered down now that virtually everything in it is optional. There's still a weird bureaucracy of priestcrafters getting up to who knows what behind the scenes, but for ordinary members, it's more of a fashion statement than anything else.

Meanwhile, Islamic fundamentalism is feeling its wheaties now like it hasn't since the days of the Muslim conquests.

One of the most bizarre spectacles of irrationality on the scene today is seeing ardent feminists embrace fundamentalist Islam like a long lost friend. It's like watching someone who constantly complains about a society where second-hand smoke is still allowed in pubs on Tuesdays, turn around and either join or endorse a society that forces its members to smoke 3 packs a day.

What's next for Sinead? Joining the FLDS?

Bizarre. I get her protesting the Pope due to the Catholic Church's history and cover up of child abuse, but switching from a Christian to a Muslim, especially someone like her, baffles me.

I guess she is one of those that needs to think there is a God out there and that this God has some true religion on earth.

I don't believe her conversion is genuine. She's been a publicity hound for as long as she's been around.

In the 1990's she was condemned for ripping up a picture of the pope on SNL and was subsequently banished from the show (it was unrehearsed.)

If O'Connor were to tear up a photo of Mohammed, no one would notice.

At this point, she is the sound of one hand clapping.

It would generate a lot more attention than just another washed-out celebrity drug overdose.

The only thing comes to mind is that the Central Los Angeles Courthouse is named the Stanley *Mosque* Courthouse. That's it, I got nothing else. Was she ever divorced there?

The penalty for apostacy from Islam is death. Most often, there is no central church that decrees it. Some crazy person just shows up and kills you when you least expect it because they saw you say something publicly that offends them. So knowing that their religion and God will support their actions, they just execute Allah's will to kill the apostate. Hopefully when she eventually renounces and leaves Islam, no one comes for her.

I really liked her one song (the only one I knew) and loved his music but I can't imagine how messed up my life would need to be to want that in my life.

Caffiend, you act as if Islam is monolithic which, I'm sure you know, is false. There are scores of Islams and no central organization. There were lots of Imams who denounced the fatwa, each of them as authoritative as the Ayatollah.
