Ask the Holy Roman Catholic Church!

But I suppose if "Up!" is no longer an option, all the other available answers are not as desirable.

Look at toys are us or radio shack. Once mighty companies now defunct.

Look at Sears. Once the largest retailer. Sears still fighting to hang on has sold or is trying to sell parts of itself. In the end. All that will be left is its pension fund.

What will the boy scouts be like without the infusion of millions of dollars from the church as well as tens of thousands of enrollees, a great many that never even knew they were signed up as scouts?

As I see it, some disappear, some fight to the bitter end, some adapt and some fold into other organizations.

Sadly, in corporate bankruptcies the pension fund is about the first thing to go.

A few years ago, Sears merged with KMart (another rapidly failing once-great retailer). Maybe the Mormon (sic) church can join forces with another failing religious organization.

Just the facade of Mormonism is crumbling. The Religion Department, and the Public Relations Department are failing. The Advertising Department is stepping up. As for the Business Department, the real estate business is rock-solid! The land TSCC owns, Nation-wide, and in other countries (such as their temple sites, large cattle ranches, resort lands in Hawaii and Florida, and their latest acquisitions in Africa) will sustain the Mormon bigwigs for many generations to come.

TSCC doesn't need people's tithing money. They would like to keep the religious facade active, to avoid huge taxes. Their building projects are useful for money-laundering. They have an intelligent task-force of lawyers and business heads, and will figure out other ways to accomplish this, once the "Mormon" church crumbles away. All that will be left is their business entity, Forever LDS, Inc.

Well, the thing is...there are lots of ways down the hill.
A fast fall off a cliff, a slow meander down the switchbacks, a start-and-stop meandering trek...

They're all down the hill, but their effect varies :)

Successful companies go on for generations even centuries. Ford's been going on for 100 years. it did really well in the 20's, in the 30's there were some labor strikes and layoffs, but came back in the 50s and was really good tell about the 80's. And now with government bailouts in Motor city, it's still doing mediocre.

GE is another company that just wont die, it has terrible financials yet makes really good appliances. And the feds have to bail them out again. It baffles me that they can't make the numbers work? Yet the engineering in the appliances is top notch... they work great!

And Penneys is almost a penny stock now. Brand name is the only thing that keeps them going.

And of course there Rockerfellers old Standard Oil company, now branched off and called Exon Mobil which is one of biggest companies in the world but somehow is reporting a profit loss on their financials, negative income tax? How is that possible? Yet a necessity in every American life.

Obviously one direction, down. Is that the answer you were asking for?
Part of being human is adapting to change and working together. Another organization will pop up that people will move to.
