Yes, he has indeed revealed something important to us, something that was previously obscured by tact and tradition among the Brethren.

To wit, he seems compelled to prove that he can say or do whatever he wants.

The corollary to this is that all his predecessors could have said or done whatever they wanted as well. They didn't have to continue any doctrine or practice they didn't want to continue. So they are absolutely, totally responsible for everything they said or did.

Far from being obedient placeholders, or perhaps men of their time, they were actually Gods, knowing good from evil. That is a terrifying responsibility. I suspect that, given their absolute freedom to choose, they have received just as much forgiveness as they extended to others. Not much.
