In addition to the still-officially-undetermined number of human deaths in the California wildfires, the National Park Service is now reporting that mountain lion P-74 (who was less than two years old) likely died in the Woolsey fire.

To Californians, including those of us living in southern California, we also care about our mountain lions and our other wildlife. (One of our mountain lions, named P-22, is a celebrity worldwide, due to a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC photographer's photos of him. The "P" in the names means "puma," which is one of several different names for this species.)

There was a chance that P-74's collar might have been damaged, but he might have survived....but the official word now is: he perished.

:(

Aww...

That fire (and the others) took far too much life. Of all kinds.

I hope there's a Rainbow Bridge for the likes of that cougar. He was so young and not ready to die when he was taken. The picture/s of him on the link provided show a beautiful wild animal, that looked fearless but dare I say inexperienced? He wasn't able to escape like the others for whatever reason - most likely it was totally beyond his control.

Only this wasn't because of a "natural disaster," it was man made. Instead of nature in conflict with man, it is man in conflict with nature and with himself.
