From complications related to diabetes. Sister of movie producer Garry Marshall. She was an acclaimed comedic actress, film director and producer in her own right. Garry passed on in 2016.

May she R.I.P.

May she rest in peace.

I thought she was great in Laverne & Shirley.

Time is relentless.

I didn't follow her career after Laverne & Shirley, so I still only have that young image of her in my mind.

It's hard to believe how fleeting youth is.

When I was young 10 years seemed like something close to an eternity--with almost that much potential in it. Now a decade seems to go by as fast as a month used to seem to go by when I was a teen. Weeks go by like days used to go by. Monday is morning. Wednesday is lunchtime and Friday is evening.

Life is weird.

The New York Times has done the best write-up I can find on Penny Marshall's life story.

She overcame lung cancer and a brain tumor from 2009. She was born and raised in the Bronx (her accent wasn't acting!)

Penny said of her life, “I’m not someone who’s had to deal with much personal drama outside of the usual: growing up with parents who hated each other, two marriages and divorces, the ups and downs of various relationships, raising a daughter and watching friends crack up and overdose. There was the cancer thing, too. As you can see, though, there’s nothing out of the ordinary, nothing that most people don’t go through, nothing that says, ‘Penny, you were lucky to get through that one.’ ” ...

[She] is survived by her older sister, Ronny; a daughter, the actress Tracy Reiner; and three grandchildren.

Critics sometimes accused Ms. Marshall of being overly sentimental, but she never apologized for that side of her work.

“I like something that tells a story or that tells me something I didn’t know,” she told The San Diego Union-Tribune in 1992 when asked about her taste in films. “It should have humor in it — or it should have heart.”

“And if it doesn’t,” she added, with what the reporter described as a sly grin, “I’ll make it have heart.”"

Reading this makes me think, gee, we have so much in common. Maybe growing up with parents who hated each other, having been married twice and divorced twice, and other things that life throws our way, isn't just a peculiarity limited to having grown up in a cult! And THAT is A RELIEF. :)

I never really watched Laverne and Shirley. But A League of Their Own is one of my all time favorite movies.
