Disagreement and degrading - break down of discernment in childhood?

When in childhood do you think some kids break down in their capacity to discriminate between what is disagreement and degradation? Is it a process or a few traumatic emotional assaults that make some kids see degradation instead of disagreement for the rest of their lives?

I am interested in understanding emotional abuse and the incapacity some adult and cult-oriented people have discriminating between degradation and disagreement.

People taught to say they know their church is true naturally are going to have problems discerning between degradation and disagreement and need to learn about belief and the wiggle room it affords them.
