Link between brain damage and religious fundamentalism

TLDR; Damage to part of the prefrontal cortex impairs cognitive flexibility and open-mindedness. People w/ prefrontal cortex damage have difficulty accepting facts that contradict rigidly held beliefs.

We are complicated creatures. Perhaps inflexability is one manifestation of a primitive survival instinct - don't trust anything what-so-ever outside what you know.
