In my opinion, he may not have had sex with each of them very often. In fact, he may have only hooked up with them once and then was over them.

He was a player. He wasn't trying to have children with these women. He probably lusted after a woman but once he finally got her in bed, he lost interest. Just like a lot of guys (and women) today. They were just one-time hookups. But Joe had justify his sexual conquests by calling them plural wives.

The chance of a women getting pregnant having sex once is small, only like 5%. If he had sex only once with each of these women, then probably only 1 or 2 of these women got pregnant by him. Joe also could have done the pull out method which would have reduced the chances of conception ever more.

Then there's the oft chance of miscarriages.
