"Watch this video of Matt Easton, valedictorian of the Political Science Department, giving the convocation speech for BYU graduation in the Marriott Center and announcing, 'I stand before my family, friends, and graduating class today to say that I am proud to be a gay son of God.' ”
He continues, "I am not broken. I am loved and important in the plan of our Great Creator." There were cheers from the audience.
I sincerely hope that BYU doesn't mess with him before his degree is officially conferred. But there would be a world of hurt (bad publicity) for the school if that does happen.
If this had happened five years ago, this guy would have been quickly excommunicated and his degree held-up because of an honor code violation (the sin of being gay). He might have been beat-up and no one would have dared to clap for him. This would have all been terrible injustices, but none-the-less would have occurred, which is why no one has done this hefore.
So from an official ecclesiastical position and with regard to cultural changes inside of the church, what happened? What do most TBMs think of such contrast of positions? Is the church bending to accommodate the expectations of the non-mormon world? Were the Prophets of the 1960's through 1980's wrong? Or are the modern Prophets wrong? What would Spencer W. Kimball say? What would Jesus (if he exists at all) say about what previous mormon prophets said about this issue? How can one reconcile these conflicts and still claim to believe in this cult?
