GF told me, "The Mormon Missionaries are at the door."
I said, "Record this."
She did, After pleasantries they asked if we'd ever dealt with missionaries like them before. I told them I was them before, that I served a mission, married in temple, raised a family in the church but resigned after 9-11.
They asked me why?
I said, "Well, what did the Prophet have to say about 9-11?"
They shrugged and said they didn't know.
I said, Exactly! You don't know because he said Nothing. Doesn't it seem like the prophet ought to have something to say about the worst terrorist attack on US soil?
They agreed he should.
I saud, well that's when I realized there was no such thing as a God who speaks through prophets. I mean the Dalai Lama had something to say on 9-11, and he doesn't claim to be a prophet.
Who?
The Dalai Lama.
Who is that?
Uh, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists.
Oh.
That's why we are a lot closer to Buddhists than anything. They get it.
Oh I see, so do you still believe in God?
Yes. Einstein's god, Nature. Only one who does play dice with the universe. Only the dice are loaded in favor of order instead of chaos.
Oh cool. So is there anything we can do for you?
Uh yeah I was about to pick up the dog shit and mow lawn, you guys wanna do that so I can lay in my hammock and drink a beer and smoke a bowl?
Uh sure. We can do that.
Nah, that's alright fellas I got it. Have a good night.

Like I told my GF afterwards, "Wow. I was surprisingly calm."
She said,"I know, especially since you're high as fuck!"

I get that same look of puzzlement when I tell them I was so nearly one of them but for the grace of gawd and Gordon B.

Who knows if these tiny seeds we sow will take root and gestate as they wend their weary way?

This is the first time I really felt pity for them. They were younger than any of my kids and just looked like JH schoolers. I guess I no longer have the heart to crush their testimonies into smithereens.
I guess that's what recovery is like.

one Sunday during this ward's meetings. They assumed I must attend a different ward and I told them I had resigned. They offered to do ANYTHING for me and they wouldn't talk about religion as they are bored to death. I told them no.

But I like your idea! I could sure use someone to do that first task. I already pay the kids next door to mow my lawn.

Nice. Love the way you handled that.

I had a similar encounter at someone's door while on my mission decades ago. Made me think for the first time ever. Still took a long time to get out but I always count that as the beginning--the moment that made the rest of my life possible.

Mine asked me very sincerely after I bore my testimony that he didn't doubt my intense feelings, but if what I felt wasn't just something I had worked myself up into? Deep down, way deep down, all the way to China deep down, some part of me knew he was right.

It's always worth a try.

I guess I just don't care anymore if I change their minds, enough to argue with delusional cult reqruiters. If my neighbors are too dumb to use Google to type in Joseph Smith, maybe they deserve to get defrauded by a GD Doomsday CULT. I can't save the world, I got shit to do!

You make me laugh. Love the place you are coming from. " I can't save the world, I got shit to do!"

Here's a little nostalgic guilt trip for you from the Mormons. Remember this?

Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.

Everybody has got to cheer themselves up. Its the only kind that lasts.

Well this thread has suddenly reminded me of my old friend and veritable folk hero of this recovery board who posted under the moniker NEPA.

He had just left the faith but had a missionary age son who was considering his options.

As I recall the quandry involved a set of missionaries who had gained his son's ear.

His kindly treatment of the mishies is what established his status as a hero to be emulated.

Although he hasn't been seen here for ages he happens to be one of the few RfMers that I have met IRL. His visit to the valley included a lively lunch with the Bensons and yours truly.

Wherever you are Eric you are remembered here.

I don't know if you mean before or after, but I'm sure the First Presidency would have issued some kind of statement about September 11 since they do that about many major incidents and disasters. Bit unfair to expect them to know about it.

As for beforehand, I don't remember any specific prophecy about it.

The one extraordinary think about 9/11 is that it happened on US soil. Major terrorist events and bombings are happening all the time which kill hundreds, and some countries have been bombed to smithereens - sometimes by US hardware.

Before or after. The so-called "Prophet" had nothing to say for two days after 9-11. Nothing. Dead silence. Then on 9/14 a huge important meeting was called. We all showed up to the live broadcast to hear the so-called "Mouthpiece of God" reveal Gods thinking on 9-11.
Instead we got an hour of MoTab greatest hits and some platitudes. Nothing of substance. No word on God's intentions on 9-11. I left the session feeling like the dog laying on my back porch knows as much about Gods intentions as Gordo the Clown PRofit. Fuck religion. Fuck tribalism. Fuck Nationalism. Be the change you want to see in the world.

It's NOT unfair to expect them to know before hand... IF they truly ARE prophets. That is the whole point of a prophet, to prophesy.

Prophet synonyms: seer, soothsayer, forecaster of the future, fortune teller, clairvoyant, prognosticator

Prophecy synonyms: prediction, forecast, prognostication, prognosis, divination

Prophesy synonyms: predict, foretell, forecast, foresee, forewarn of, prognosticate, divine

I agree. Why maintain the fake facade of being led by a Prophet when the leader of your church completely failed to speak for God when we needed to hear from God about his intentions? A god who fails to intervene is as good as dead to me.
And anybody claiming to be a prophet of that evil bastard is as good as dead to me.

It wasn't the Hinkster's style to even allude that he had any sort of revelation power. I think when he became the official dickhead of the church, he downplayed every possible notion (especially to the members of the Q12) that the church needed more divine whispering. I think he kept his mouth shut (that he didn't believe in the hocus-pocus) while he served under SWK, ETB and Hunter.

Then he was a fraud, who prostituted his ethics, by perpetuating the lie that God speaks through prophets, for power and money.
