Nelson first targeted the youth by requesting them to stay offline for 7 days (June 2018).

Then he asked the women to take a 10 day "fast" in Oct 2018.

So where's the demand for the men to follow suit and set the example?

Aren't men equally engrossed with online communities and following their teams (sports)?

Unlike children and women, men have important things to do.

I don’t know. But both my brother and SIL haven’t used Facebook since last October. Which is REALLY unusual for them, especially my brother who has always loved it...

"always loved it."

That's the clue. Anything that people love, enjoy, find recreational - will eventually be targeted as "evil" by the cult leadership.

Actually many, many studies show that social media sites like Facebook and just social media generally erode self esteem , contribute to depression, anxiety and isolation, among other things.
But maybe you mean something else by “evil. “

No, I meant "evil" in the context of how the Mormon cult defines evil, which is different than the rest of us. You're interacting with someone who was born into the cult, RM, Temple married, YBU grad, and 40 years of wasting my life in the wretched mind**** that is Mormonism. Mormon tenet and doctrine has it's nasty paws in everything a human being can do, from the underwear that is worn, to what is consumed (drink/food), music, literature, recreation, type of hobbies one may enjoy, EVERYTHING. If it is enjoyed by the average Human, marked my word - Mormon cult leaders will find something wrong with it for the rank and file sheepie.

Yeah, I mean, sure, everything in moderation. Anything that is done over the top can be bad for you. Most normal people who use Fb can do so maturely and recreationally. Wouldn't you agree Cate? Most people who consume coffee will drink a few a day, and don't drink 20 cups per day? Most who drink beer, will keep tabs on it. Catch my drift. You can pose research about anything really, and spin it to be bad for a person if done in excess. My point was that the Mormon cult, in order to control, guilt, and mind**** the sheep - need those tithing dollars coming in to support the lifestyle of the leadership and their families. Evil evil cult. Don't you agree?

Completely agree. Facebook can be unhealthy and, sure, if I’m constantly scrolling newsfeed looking at how everyone else is having a great time (which is usually false anyway) I have started feeling quite down. Not so if I use it in a healthy, moderated way. But yeah, this would be so typical of the mormon cult. But no one has been able to answer if this is actually the case. I see many mormons still using Fb as usual. But, like I said, brother and sil have not used it for nearly a year - which is totally weird (but I haven’t yet confirmed if they’ve restricted me).

I don't know if this has been discussed in the past, but there is a strong possibility that church leaders (Jo F Smith) announced Family Home Evening during the Oct 1970 GC. We all know that Monday was designated as holy family time with more crappy mormon lessons, church hymns and scripture reading.

Did you realize that Monday Night Football debuted Sep 21 1970?

I don't believe in coincidences. I think the church was afraid that men (and the youth) would love football/sports more than the hollow words of the spiritual mice of the church. So they created a program to keep the men busy on Monday nights.

But MNF was ANNOUNCED in May 1969, giving church leaders time to spoil the fun before the actual debut:

https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1935354,1935450#msg-1935450

Then Rector lied about it at the Oct 1971 GC:

https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1935354,1935382#msg-1935382

And so the lie took on a life of its own, like the Marsh milk strippings lie.

Paul Dunn, the infamous Mormon LIAR commented directly on this in a talk shortly after.
The Lord came out with Family Home Evening. Satan came out with Monday Night Football.

Odd he and others did not mention Family Home Evening then was the THIRD effort at it. Twice before they had tried it and the efforts eventually failed.

I've noticed a sharp decline in facebook usage as well by my mormon extended family. I guess it's a sin or something. As for Nelson getting after the men, do check out his talk during Priesthood session April conference 2019, He goes into reading a letter from some wife complaining that her husband is spending too much time checking the stock market, sports, etc, and not enough time engaged with the family.

So yes the men are getting the guilt too.

In my experience tbm men spend far too much time on church duties rather than being engaged with family.

I’ve noticed that some mormons are using it again. But not my tbm family members. I’ve half been wondering if they’ve restricted me on Facebook. I know they’ve logged in because in-person they’ve commented on stuff I’ve posted. So clearly viewing stuff is fine? But my SIL has posted NOTHING for an entire year, and my brother for an entire 10 months. Either I’m more unpopular than I thought or there is far more to this story. Like you said, it’s now almost a sin? I thought this was just a ten day fast originally, like 10 months ago. My brother used to post important stuff at least. Now they’re having a holiday in the uk. I will be absolutely gobsmacked if they don’t share any photos.

I've been wondering, but still unsure whether or not the GAs vet their thoughts/suggestions/edicts for practicality or not;

anyone?

I really don’t think they consider the consequences of stuff. They seem to genuinely think they are right, and that everyone should just do as they say. Power tripping overcomes the fear of repercussions/ political correctness/criticism.

so that I could virtue signal about abstaining from following my favorite sports teams and get patted on the back for my strength of will and sacrifice.

The truth is I lost interest in following sports teams about the same time that I checked out of the Hotel Mormon a few decades ago. I guess I just outgrew it and didn't need it as a distraction or escape. Maybe being an active member of the church is what drove me to seek out such diversions when I was younger.

Now, after several decades of "abstinence", following sports teams seems silly to me beyond belief. Like, why should I care in the slightest about the outcomes of ball games played by and among various teams of overpaid men who are complete strangers to me and with whom I have nothing in common? Sadly, I can't get any Mormon brownie points for abstaining.

Speaking of abstaining, I've also been abstaining for several decades from watching the Mormon General Conference broadcasts. That stuff will rot your brain.

Because it is fun.

Like you, I “abstained” from my youthful sports fanaticism once three children came on the heels of marriage. There just wasn’t as much time and plenty of other things to worry about. I dropped following some sports altogether and casually observed the others.

Now, at 51, family cares and worries are largely behind me. I’ve rediscovered my childhood love for baseball. With the At Bat app on my phone and TV, I couldn’t help becoming a fanatic. So much so, should Montréal get a team, we’re retiring in Montréal. Well, we might do that anyway. If no team, The Bronx is only a train ride away...

We watch sports because it is fun.

They are the suits

Men only spend time offline, or on RFM (Return From Missing)

...and I'm hearing more such reports from other people. (I don't have an account.) It may be that Facebook, as a novelty medium, is peaking. Something else will come along and grab everybody's attention--and data--and advertising hits--etc.

Now, what's my MySpace password again...it's scribbled on a PostIt Note somewhere around here...

I'm not using it as much -- maybe once or twice a week. I do belong to a networking group on FB for my job which is quite useful. But I get tired of the endless chipper memes, political posts, etc. I want to know what is going on with people's lives.

I don't use it as much as I did. I still use it too much. Facebook is annoying, but it gives me things to write about.

Sunday long services to make sure you miss the Sunday football game... my dad would sit through the F&T and sacrament meetings, and split to his car to catch the foot ball game on the radio... while the kiddies went to primary... he refused to go to the penis holder meetings...

Men get harassed about porn and things sexual because it is a bigger issue with them.

Women and girls get harassed about social media because it is a bigger issue with them.

Sounds like equality.

Of course, harassing women is considered abuse, while harassing men is good, because men are generally a problem.

The original post had nothing to do with your last two sentences, quit making everything about your ego and hatred of women.

There is truth to what he says. I was shocked that the Church claimed that women were "doing something wrong"

Everyone is doing something wrong according to the church.

They aim their guilt trips at targeted audiences after having researched various metrics based on member's behavior.

Anything can be made a sin as long as one of the Old men in Salt Lake declare it so.
