Ticks have to be about the vilest creatures in God's (or Satan's) creation along with tapeworms, flukes etc. There's a whole theological lesson there. Keeping it on topic right there! Even in evolutionary terms, they're sick.

But seriously, how do you deal with ticks. I love camping but I found four of the wee bastards crawling on me when I went out last weekend. I got bitten at least twice when they decided to go to bed. At least I never had to pull them off. I keep thinking I'll catch that disease which escaped Montauk Island - Lyme's or whatever it's called.

How do you stop 'em? I wear long sleeves and pants.

What? Montauk Island doesn't exist. I used to fish out of Montauk. There is no Montauk Island. You thinking of Plum Island? If so, they weren't growing ticks that escaped.

Don't worry too much. Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) is treatable. There is a popular panic over "chronic lyme disease" spread by non-doctors on the internet. There is no evidence that it has anything to do with ticks or lyme disease.

I know with every fiber of my beans that god is real because ticks can't fly.

Actually, ticks CAN fly. I found one embedded in me after flying back home from Texas.

I knew that would bother you, perfectionist that you are.

The tocks left town for the long holiday weekend. They'll be

back.

Peppermint oil or Tea Tree oil supposedly repels them. Coffee repels the other varmint.

Lot's of DEET and light colored clothes. I've heard that they don't care for light colored clothes, but I think it just actually makes them easier to spot.

Also, some people seem to be much more attractive to ticks. I worked with one guy who usually had a couple on him every day, when I never had one the entire summer. If you know somebody like that, always take them camping with you.

And also bring someone who cannot out run the bear.

You tend to pick up ticks walking through underbrush. I have noticed ticks are especially bad after a wet spring. You decrease your chances of picking up ticks by wearing long sleeved shirts and pants. The more skin that is exposed the more ticks you can pick up.

Always check yourself for ticks and I mean check everywhere. They like to get into crevices and cracks and under folds of skin.

Exofficio 'Insect Shield' bandana

It repels ticks, ants, mosquitos, flies, chiggers, midges. Repellency remains effective for 70 washings.

Stick to Tick-free living.
