Not sure if this is a big thing or not but they've been closing a few of these lately!

A news release from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the closure of the Guatemala Missionary Training Center, located on the block northwest of the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple, effective January 2020. The closure of the facility will allow for better utilization of the Mexico MTC, which has accommodations for large groups of missionaries learning the Spanish language. Future use of the Guatemala building will be determined in consultation with local leaders.

Well, yeah! It was much too small to service the burgeoning missionary force of a church growing by such leaps and bounds!

Hey, is it true that one of the first words you Central American missionaries learn, that wasn't part of the curriculum in the LTM/MTC, is ametralladora?

The Mexico MTC used to be a High School (which I attended myself), and let me tell you, that thing is _huge_ and has facilities for large numbers of people. Why would they spend on the MTC in Guatemala when the MTC in Mexico City can fulfill all of their needs?

Because it used to be a High School (and not an MTC) as recently as 2013

It must take some $$$ to pay Mexico for foreigners to come into their country for "educational purposes". If Mexico later nullifies their visa agreement with Guatemala, then the church is going to look foolish.
