https://www.npr.org/2019/12/13/787441881/this-grieving-family-wants-the-u-s-to-designate-mexican-cartels-as-terrorists

It's been a month since the brutal massacre of nine women and children in northern Mexico. They were all dual U.S.-Mexican citizens and members of the extended LeBaron family.

Since then, that family has been on a mission: Urging the U.S. government to get more involved in the fight against drug cartels, which have been blamed for gruesome violence across Mexico — including the attack on the LeBaron family.

"It's hard for the Mexican government to compete with that kind of finance, that kind of firepower," said Bryan LeBaron, a cousin of the victims who lives in Utah. "This is going to take an international response or we have no hope."

The LeBaron family came to Washington this week to lobby members of Congress. The family wants the U.S. government to designate drug cartels as terrorist organizations. That would give the U.S. government more tools to fight them and could clear the way for the U.S. to send troops or drones into Mexico.

Members of the LeBaron family have been living in northern Mexico for generations, since they split from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though they still consider themselves Mormon. They live in an area near the U.S.-Mexico border that is a major corridor for drug trafficking.

Family members saw the growing violence around them, says Rhonita's sister, Adriana Jones. But nothing could have prepared them for what happened.

"There was this idea that our innocence would protect us. That somehow, because we were so completely uninvolved in any of it, that we were safe," she said.

This remark prompted in me, first, a very callous thought, then a serious question.

1) Callous thought: Such innocence! "You mean, their magic underwear didn't protect them?"

2) Serious question: Do the Mexican LDS off-shoot members still wear the garment? And do they still practice polygamy, and believe it to be essential for their exaltation?

When Joju (Joseph Smith, Jr.) announced the plural marriage doctrine, he called it (and it retains this title) The New and Everlasting Covenant.

And so since 1890 and then 1904, all the polygamist offshoots stand there, looking at the SLC offshoot, asking the question, "Just what part of Everlasting Covenant don't you noodleheads get?!"

And this has become one of my favorite themes: As the laws of the nation and most states stand now, a mormon can marry a first wife by 'earth' law and in the temple, and then be temple sealed to as many other wives as will say yes! They can all live under one roof, or in one compound and the law will not care a whit.

Those chicken-shiz panty-waists in Salt Lake just don't have the balls to do what ghawd told them to do!

I was just wondering if they might have drifted away.

Speaking of panty-waists, I'll assume, by implication, that the Mexican exiles continue to wear the garment.

If they want the US Government to protect them from the cartels, I think they should maybe move to a bit more northerly locale, but they want to have their cake made out of niña tears and eat it, too.

I feel for the innocent kids, but for the adult women, I just want to say, wake up. The p-hood is a lie. They can't promise magical protection with their manly momo righteousness and are cowards for not sending their and wives and children north because then they'd have to document everyone and explain why so many of the mothers are still minors themselves. They'd rather continue their kiddie fiddling than keep their families out of cartel crossfire.

The wives are going to have to figure it all out, as always. All the weight of polygamy falls on the women.

Typical followers of Joseph Smith's beginnings, cry victim and plead for others to come to their aid. Don't let these Mormon fundamentalist criminals fool you, they have blood on their own hands.

"The family has had a sordid history, Bowman said. Its founder's sons fell victim to infighting. One, Ervil LeBaron, formed his own church that took on a cult following, said Anna LeBaron, who was one of Ervil's 51 children with 13 wives. She was born at the LeBaron colony and escaped her father's cult when she was 13; she detailed her experience in a 2017 book, "The Polygamist's Daughter."

"My father would order mob-style hits and those would be carried out by his cult members if they stopped believing in him or his practice or religion and left, or sometimes it was rival cult leaders that were blood-atoned for being false prophets," she said, adding that media outlets dubbed him the "Mormon Manson."

They weren't innocent victims of a drug cartel mistake, they brought this on themselves.

"an ongoing series of violent clashes between the LeBarons and an alliance of local farmers over land and water rights in the semi-desert of northwestern Chihuahua."

"The farming collective is called El Barzón. Its dispute with the Mormon clan over local aquifers goes back some six decades, and had escalated dramatically over the last few years. The farmers accuse the family of syphoning “excessive” amounts of water from rivers and vital aquifers for the commercial cultivation of maguey, nopal, and walnut trees, leaving nearby communities without enough water for subsistence farming."

"Mexico’s National Water Commission (CONAGUA) also alleges the LeBarons’ have sunk hundreds of illegal wells on their properties. They also have reservoirs allegedly bulldozed to hold water diverted from local rivers, leaving little or nothing for indigenous communities downstream."

Mexico would do well to deport all Mormon polygamists back to the US.

They are not US citizens. They live in Mexico. They should address their concerns and safety w/the Mexican police authorities and Mexican military...Whatever that will get them.

They don't get to "claim" US citizenship and demand US help when they reside in a foreign country. I know many, if not all, can move back. If they want to really be safe, that is their only option.

Remember they LEFT the US to escape US laws that they didn't like (polygamy)...They don't get to NOW ask for US help.

Choices...they made them and they can now live with the consequences

Not a fan of the dual citizenship thang...Grow up and live in 1 country, but then come back to the "mother" country (US) for benefits..in the case of the LeBarons' at least.

Many of the LeBarons have grown up and lived in Mexico their whole lives...for religious reasons. Let them go to the Mexican govt for the help they need

Well, that's the beauty of going to Capitol Hill. You can walk into any of the House or Senate office buildings, and get someone from your legislator's office to listen to you. The doors are wide open. The names of people that you hear about on the news every day are on each door -- some real rock stars! Sometimes if you are lucky you can see the legislators rushing back and forth from their offices to the Capitol building so that they can cast their votes. It's a fascinating place, really.

However, the request from the LeBarons is unlikely to be granted for the numerous reasons cited in the linked article.

It seems that the LeBaron family wants to have their cake, and eat it, too. They want to live in Mexico with U.S. government protections. That's not going to happen. If they stay north of the U.S/Mexico border, and live in a reasonably safe area, they should be fine.

Don't they have the priesthood? Temple? They're fine. Oh they of little faith.
