Although Church President Russell M. Nelson announced in late 2019 that the pioneer-era temple will close and will remain closed for approximately four years while undergoing a major structural and seismic renovation, progress in other areas of Temple Square proper are ahead of schedule. The temple itself is expected to reopen in 2024 with a public open house.
“This project will enhance, refresh, and beautify the temple and its surrounding grounds,” said President Nelson. “Obsolete systems within the building will be replaced. Safety and seismic concerns will be addressed. Accessibility will be enhanced so that members with limited mobility can be better accommodated.”
Richard Eyring Turley Jr., Managing Director of Public Affairs director for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been pleased with the progress of the much anticipated Temple Square renovation in allowing the advanced unveiling of the updated "Miracle of the Seagulls" Sculpture. This new rendering commemorates the miracle of the gulls which was an 1848 event often credited by Latter-day Saints ("Mormons") for saving the Mormon Pioneers' second harvest in the Salt Lake Valley.
According to traditional accounts, legions of gulls appeared by 1848 June 9 following fervent prayers by the pioneer farmers. It is said that these birds ate mass quantities of crickets, drank some water, regurgitated, and continued eating more crickets over a two-week period.
