While the Mormons certainly had (and still have) racist teachings (see both Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's teachings on the subject), what they really did was run with the ball that they were given, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like some of the white Evangelical churches in the deep south, has never owned up to its role in the spread of white supremacist beliefs. Yes, it now allows African-American members to attend the temple; but it has never, to this day, found the courage to say that what Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and other leaders have said even in this current century, was wrong! And it has never apologized for the racist actions and statements of those leaders.
