I remember a bit about the trip from my Mish, 67-69 to Indiana;

I'd like to compare it to what's happening / SL Amtrak today...

Dave the Atheist, others, can U hear me?

Amtrak is keeping passengers spaced out and you must wear a mask unless you are in a sleeping compartment.

IF I recall correctly, the eastbound UP train for mishs left SL BACKING to Ogden;

As I recall, the UP originally by-passed SL, but a 'stub track' was built there later as the route went thru Ogden N of SL.

the UP that I & others were on BACKED to Ogden before heading east!!

having previously worked on passenger trains on the GN, I wondered (should have asked, ha ha!) 'why don't they WYE the equipment in / close to SL?

I can't imagine that Amtrak is still doing that, isn't their next East-bound route to Denver thru SL (on what RRs former right-of-way??

Eastbound U.P. trains left Salt Lake in normal direction. Once in Ogden, train had to back into station since station was on Pocatello line.
Current eastbound Amtrak trains from Salt Lake depart from the new station next to Frontrunner trains so no backing is necessary.Route is on former Rio Grande trackage.

It took longer than driving because of all the stops but you could sleep and relax. They also had WiFi and airplane style seats with tray tables.

It's my recollection (not personal, ha ha) that the original east-west line of the UP by-passed SL; is that correct?

So, trains to SL would be headed South-bound; they would either have to be WYEd or travel in reverse back to Ogden (late 60's).

Again, as I recall, the trains originated in LA, they would have 'touched' Ogden twice....

Some Utahns established a short-line to connect to Ogden.

The original transcontenental line went through Ogden on its way to the meet at Promontory. Salt Lake was bypassed and later connected with a railroad from Salt Lake to Ogden.

Do you want to hear about riding the Heber Creeper or the Skunk train?

Would you like to hear about the Skunk or the Super Skunk ? They are two different things.

How about the California Zephyr, departing from Niles, on to Stocton and Sacramento, then threading through the Feather River Canyon, and arriving in Provo at about 3:00 am. In SLC, the porters would grab our pillows, even though there was about an hour and a half until we had to wake up.

Good times dancing in the observation car, under the desert stars.
