O/T We have a new baby panda!

At age 22, Mei Xiang gave birth today at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. She immediately cradled her new baby, who is vocalizing and apparently doing well.

It's really tiny -- described as being the size of a stick of butter. A lot of times she holds it in her paw or paws when she's not nursing it. The staff says the baby looks healthy and it's very noisy! Mei Xiang is an experienced mom so I don't think anyone doubted that she would take good care of it.

Jealous. We have a set of pandas at our zoo. I think there are only 6 zoos in the country thar do. They tried for a decade to get a baby out of it. I guess it may be too late now. But we get baby giraffes every year and they are adorable. Last year we got a baby hippo. Too stinkin cute.
