I can think of two: Aaron Eckhart was in "Godly Sorrow," which, as I recall, was about a Mormon guy boinking his Mormon girlfriend, and having to do the whole repentance thing.

Will Swenson, now married to the beautiful Audra McDonald, was "The Singles Ward" and "Sons of Provo." Later, he was the voice of Jebus in one of the Cinemax LDS recruitment films in the Hotel Utah... Sorry. "Joseph Smith Memorial Building." That's when he dropped out of the church and starred in "Hair," where he had a totally nude part. The church was so distressed by this, that they pulled the expensive film, and I guess showed something else. A lot of money went down the drain.

Every time I see a photo of the Hotel Utah--sorry, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building--I recall that it was in front of that edifice that Gary Gilmore's future parents met. It was the beginning of a truly remarkable love story whose consequences live on in state history.

Not as random as one might think, given the role Mormonism played in the Gilmore saga.

Money going down the drain is nothing new in Mormonism.

That's where most of it goes. And new clothes!

I remember watching him in The Singles Ward and thinking he didnt seem Mormonish even in a mormon movie.

I saw him as Javert in Les Mis on Broadway and he played the part very well and he said he had some good examples of who to base the character after. Which is just... obvious.

Going way back into the vault for these:

A 1969 church film called "Worthy to Stand" starred a very little known Mike Ferrell, who later starred in "M*A*S*H*" as BJ Honnicutt.

I can't remember the name of the church film, but another one from the 1960s or 70s had Robert Pine in it. Robert Pine is best known for playing the sergeant on "CHiPs". He also played Jim Halpert's Dad on three episodes of "The Office" and is the real life father of actor Chris Pine.

Robert Pine was in "on the way home" from the 90's. It was my least favorite of all the dumb films we would show investigators when I was an indentured marketing servant for 2 years. I went to high school with the male teenager who was in it as well. Blech that thing was so bad lol.

I used to love that movie when I was a TBM kid.

Wow, I didn't realize it was from the 1990s. I would have figured he was established enough at that point to not have to do religious propaganda films for a Utah cult.

I guess bills still need to be paid. But I'd imagine you'd have to be pretty desperate to go from a hit TV show to obscure, cult propaganda films.

The guy who played Lucifer became a conductor or something.

I remember going to the temple for the first time and someone saying, "Gee, why are the baddies always English?"

Actually he wasn't but he sounded it.

Are you referring to Michael Ballam? He was (still is?) a music professor at Utah State University and was the director of the Utah festival opera.

Mostly Church films but a few others.

"Men in Tights" directed by Mel Brooks.
