Try and spot the irony.

"Black lives matter, LDS leader Dallin Oaks tells BYU audience, and is a cause all should support.

In his speech, the 88-year-old Oaks, first counselor in the Utah-based faith’s governing First Presidency, returned to the theme he addressed at this month’s General Conference, in which he said that racism must be “rooted out.”

When it comes to taking the names of slaveholders off buildings on university campuses, including at BYU, however, Oaks said they may “accomplish nothing but a bow to the cause of political correctness.”

Oaks never mentioned the church’s own centurylong priesthood/temple ban on Blacks, which ended in 1978, but he did talk about how some religious people defended their racist views by pointing to the Bible.

Under current definitions, “some might call such divine actions and prophet-taught principles racist, but God, who is the loving father of all nations, tribes and ethnicities, cannot be branded as racist for his dealings with his children,” he said. “Often the reasons for his plan are not known or understandable to mortals.”

Ho Hum-

my thought(s) on this & things like it:

- 'rooted out' as in something that has deep roots in the audience he's addressing; Yup.

If only ChurchCo was CONSISTENT in their approach & policies of actions that harm others... vicious, deceitful divorces for example when one spouse uses Mormonism as a WEDGE.

ChurchCo 'talks the talk', appealing to their core supporters, just like... Well, you know.

my oh my, brother Mr. Oaks...

First rule of leadership, Mr Oaks: Everything is your fault.

In other words, pay no attention to the idiot who your University is named after.

Is he asking us to support the organization or the sentiment?

Until the Mormon church can officially acknowledge and apologize for its institutionalized racism of the past, they can't be taken seriously when they give lip service now, pretending to not be a racist religion now. Mr. Oakes has publicly stated that "the church does not ask for apologies, nor do we give them". So the church should never be forgiven until they change both of those policies now, and repent of their wrongful institutionalized racist actions. It's not the Church of Jesus Christ. It's the church of Dallen Oakes and others like him. The six steps of repentance that the church taught me to teach on my mission are continuously mocked as long as mormon church leaders see themselves and their predecessors exempt from them.

That's precisely the point. Thank you for articulating that so well.
The one thing that makes Oaks BLM praise so ironic is that MORmON Scriptures are filled with white supremacy and demonization of dark black skin, in ways that go far beyond anything in the Bible.
There is no embracing BLM while you refuse to redact the white supremacy written in black and white in your GD scriptures and you refuse to say one word of denunciation of past racism. He refuses to apologize for 100 years of institutionalizing racism by discriminating against blacks by denying them entry into their temples, when the ONLY basis for doing so was not liking the color of black skin.
Joseph Smith built en entire religion based upon the common 19th C racist myth used to justify slavery and genocide. The racist "revelations from God" make the God of Joseph's Myth out to be an irrational and immoral racist. Now Oaks also makes the God of Mormonism a liar and a hypocrite.

The gods of anyone are liars and hypocrites. Being a god makes one able to be appealed to and worshipped.

The concept of god is crazy and not going to get one anywhere but towards lies and hypocrisy.

According to Oaks’ talk: “God...cannot be branded as racist for his dealings with his children”. Really? Wasn’t it God who specifically turned both Cain’s skin black and Laman and Lemuel’s skin “dark and loathsome” so that they would be discriminated against by the rest of his “children”. Wasn’t that the point of having Cain wander the Earth as a vagabond and the children and descendants of Laman and Lemuel be identified as undesirable to the white and delightsome Nephites...because of their sins? He(God), according to LDS scriptures, created the races specifically so they would be easily identified and discriminated against. Racial discrimination is a core belief of Mormonism based on their interpretation of the pre-existence and the doctrine that our race was determined by our vigilance in that sphere. Mormonism is the ultimate definition of White Supremacy. To say any different is a total renunciation of a core doctrine. Oaks knows this....and I believe he still believes it, but like the lawyer he is, will argue any case his client pays him to.

Don't forget that God ordered his people to wipe out the Canaanites and the Philistines and several other "nations," meaning ethnicities. Judeao-Christian God has always discriminated based on ethnicity.

Is the ChurchCo 180 regarding racism now complete, or, is there yet more to come?

inquiring minds want to know...

Why do Mormon profits send their subordinates to give the 'Really Important' talks/speeches? Are they soooooooooo afraid of being quoted later after the speech/talk has gone sour?

Why didn't Russ give this speech?

Was it virtual / online only?

"Often the reasons for his plan are not known or understandable to mortals" [who are carrying out those "plans" (slavery, torture, neglect, hatred, lying, shame, depression, guilt, abuse, racism, prejudicism, sexism, immortality, immortality, environmental degradation, classism, etc., etc., etc.)].

IOW, MORTALS can do no wrong (because God didn't send or intend them to).

In other news, Oaks came out as gender fluid and transracial (he now identifies as Chinese after transitioning), said the Restoration was just a social construct, and announced the church policies on other-kin and furries.
