Aaron was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. Got to see him play a few times against the Dodgers. He certainly did not deserve the harassment he endured (hate mail, death threats, need for FBI protection) while chasing Babe Ruth's home run record.
It was a thrill to meet him later in life as an adult. Kind, polite, gracious, classy guy. RIP "Hammerin' Hank".
Let me explain how this works. Nobody knew he died until today because he hadn't died yet. There is nothing even remotely remarkable about not knowing someone has died, until they have died. Yet you remark on it, and this is not the first time. It causes mild eyerolls.
May I suggest "Hank Aaron died", and just leave off the "I didn't know that" part. I was surprised he was still alive. If asked, I would have guessed he died some years ago.
I expect to see a photoshopped picture of Bernie Sanders in mittens sitting next to Hank Aaron any minute now.
I didn't even know he lived or who he was, just the name...
